Description

This driftwood book is made from a piece of driftwood found along the shore of Malcolm Island—a place I visit often and hold close, a landscape that continues to shape my work and inspire my creativity. I was immediately drawn to this piece, but its thickness and irregular shape made it feel unworkable as a book.   I passed it by on several walks before finally bringing it home, realizing that, while unlike most of the driftwood books I make, it was possible to adapt. A natural thin “shelf” along one side provided just enough space to drill holes—transforming it into something unexpected and workable.

One of my favourite features is the small black stone that has naturally embedded itself into the driftwood—an elemental, quiet detail that adds to the uniqueness and presence of this piece.

The pages are dyed with oak gall nut, yielding a rich, earthy brown. The watercolour cover pages  feature hand-stitched, rune-like markings that add both texture and layered colour.

Sewn using the ancient Coptic method of bookbinding, the structure allows each page to lie completely flat when open.

The paper is a blend of watercolour and mixed media textures—ideal for marker, pastel, coloured pencil, acrylic, watercolour, charcoal, and pen and ink.

Fully functional as a journal or sketchbook, this sculptural book also stands alone as a contemplative object.
